Flag- Oral Dale Kuehn was born March 20, 1919 near Friend, Nebraska to Herman A and Hattie A
Wallenger Kuehn and died peacefully at home Saturday, September 22, 2018 at the age of 99
years, 6 months and 2 days. Oral’s family moved to a farm southeast of Elmwood, Nebraska
where he spent his childhood. He graduated from Elmwood High School in 1936. He was a
mechanic, excellent fix it man and worked in a garage after finishing school. He courted Lucile
Panska for six years before she agreed to marry him on February 17, 1943.
Oral was drafted into the US Army in 1942. He was selected for Officer Candidate School after
boot camp. After a promotion to 2nd Lt he was sent to England in late 1943 to prepare for the
DDay invasion which he missed by four days. He went to France later and was injured in a fall
and spent several months recuperating until being discharged after the war. He and Lucile
moved to his family farm in 1946. They purchased a farm near Hallsville, Missouri in 1952
where he farmed and worked as a mechanic before taking a electronics correspondence
course. In 1956 he began working at Stephens College in Columbia, Mo as an audio visual
technician .
Oral attended the Methodist church and Evangelical Brethren church as a young person. After
moving to Missouri, he and Lucile recommitted their lives to God and were baptized in the
Christian Church. Oral was active in his church and was a school board member for several
years. The farm was sold in 1960 and the family moved to Columbia where daughters Janet,
Carol and Beth completed their school years.
In 1979 Oral and Lucile sold their house and moved back to Elmwood, Nebraska to the 80 acres
they inherited from Lucile’s family. They built a new house with Oral building the cement block
basement walls as well as much of the construction. Oral continued to work for several
summers at Stephens College summer theater in Okoboji, Iowa until his retirement in 1985. Oral
was a leader in the Methodist church building committee, was commander of American Legion
Unit # 247 for several years and enjoyed helping local farmers with harvest in the fall plus being
able to fix lots of things like kerosene heaters. He borrowed a tree mover and spent several
years moving trees to their place as well as for other people. He was bit by the golf bug while
living in Columbia and he continued to enjoy many golf games in Nebraska and played at
Grandpa Woods until his mid 90’s.
Dad became a widower in June 2008. Carol lived with him for several years. He lived in his
home until October 2014 when he moved to live with Beth and her son Cory in Aurora,
Colorado. His last years were spent being part of a family who cared for him as the needs
arose. Beth and Cory were his faithful, loving caregivers for four years. He met every day with
a smile and kind words. He loved to see people and watched lots of westerns after reading
became too hard for him.
He was preceded in death by his wife Lucile, his parents, his brothers Verle and Richard, sisters
Ruby, Opal and Pearl. He is survived by his brother Eugene and wife Jan, daughters Janet and
husband Harold Cross, Carol and husband Gerry Wilhelm and Beth Betz. Grandchildren Neal,
Kevin, Eric, Scott, Ryan, Cory and Laura. Great grandchildren Emily, Sara, Bradley, Joshua,
Oleg, Amaliya and Reid. His family are so thankful to have had the privilege to be fathered and
mentored by such a wonderful Christian man. Heaven is rejoicing with another new resident
surrounded by many loved ones.
